Shane van Gisbergen returns to the Windy City - Weekend Motorsport

Kiwis are busy in the States this weekend, with four Giltrap-backed drivers competing in different series, including Shane van Gisbergen's return to the circuit that launched his State-side career a year ago. Closer to home, Supercars returns with Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge in support. It’s been a year since Shane van Gisbergen made NASCAR history when he won the inaugural Chicago Street Race as a wildcard debutant.

Fast forward a year from that historic victory, and the three-time Supercars champ is competing full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, the main feeder-competition for the top-level Cup Series.

SVG has multiple wins in the Xfinity Series and a spot in the playoffs confirmed, yet he has struggled to find consistent results on the oval, particularly the iconic Superspeedways.

This weekend is not just a return to the Windy City, but also a return to the wheel of a Cup car as part of his part-time apprenticeship that sees him do seven races in the top-series in 2024.

This means he’ll be contesting both races this weekend, and at a track where he knows he goes well, has the rare opportunity to take double honours with a win in both series.

America’s top open-wheel series heads to Mid-Ohio this weekend. Scott Dixon currently sits P3 in the championship standings, just 32-points behind leader Alex Palou.

USF Pro 2000

Liam Sceats is yet another Giltrap-backed driver who’ll be turning laps at Mid-Ohio this weekend. The 19-year-old experienced the track earlier in the year at a USF Pro 2000 test, and will be looking to shrink the 69 point gap between himself and Championship leader Lochie Hughes.

Usually competing in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, Marco Giltrap is jumping across to Carrera Cup Asia for the weekend as the series returns to the unique Bangsaen Street Circuit in Thailand for the first time in five years.

Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia

Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge heads to Townsville in support of Supercars this weekend. It’s the first time the series has raced on a street circuit in its 16-year history, and the tight walls and small margin for error will provide a new challenge for Championship contender Brock Gilchrist.
